I have a weakness for the unusual and the uncommon brands. If I could, I'd have a Kyocera laser printer, because it's about as close to indestructible as a printer can get.
Yahoo Auction (Japan) seems to be the right place for PC Engine deals. Many affordable machines available, lots of accessories and games as well.

@phoneboy I hear ya'! Been down that same path too, and I Thoth the official app would be the better choice now. Alas, I was wrong. Shit soup is the term that comes to mind.
