I keep coming back to one question; Why are nearly all corporate systems to unbelievably ugly, slow, and poorly designed?

I think your last sentence there pretty much sums it up. Bribes in different variants probably play a part as well.

Sounds delightfully awful in a "high tech, low life" kind of way. :/

Newly developed system, was about 1.5 years late when I started working there. Forced into production, replacing an old system that actually worked well, if not pretty to look at.

Sure, they've made some improvement to it over the last year or so, but it's still a big stinker, in my opinion. Something new and supposedly capable should not be so sluggish, even though it has a web-based frontend.

Some things just rub me the wrong way.

"With our stuff you can do real work on a phone, like spreadsheets and things. Because that's all that real work is."

Are these people really so inept at selling their stuff that cannot come up with any, any other example than the effing spreadsheet as "real work"? Not just once, but whenever companies have to demonstrate "real work", it's a spreadsheet.

I guess people truly have been brainwashed into the cult of Excel over the last 30 years. Apparently it's all some people know when it comes to computers.

Exactly! My patience with shitty systems and even worse solutions at work is growing thinner by the day, so I have to do something about it before I go postal.

I mean, a brand spanking new system is by far the slowest and least user friendly I have so far had the great displeasure of using at any workplace. It's just mind-numbingly dumb. Or as I like to describe it; designed by incompetent committee, built by morons!

Hm. Not that I'm a fan of the idea in the long run, but being able to run select Android apps on Ubuntu Touch would fix some of the most annoying shortcomings of the app selection.

Basically to take some level of control over my digital life. Just small utilities that make sense to me (probably not so many other people).

Not to mention start automating nonsense at work, which I would love to do. Too many repetitive crap tasks that don't add to anything.

I should put some effort into learning a bit of python.

Good reminder! I should get a small pack and always have in my bag. Never know when the need might arise.

Indeed. After looking for reasonably priced units at the right amount of storage, it’s nearly a small miracle that I’ve found two different ones in the span of two months. Oh well, playtime on the Ubuntu Touch side, I guess.
