Reading what Alan Kay has said over the years is dangerous. That dude makes a lot of sense!
@matigo When you get your space base and starship ready for construction, I'll gladly supply you the phaser… computers. :>
@matigo Great minds and all that? ;D
I have been thinking about a "real" powerful workstation as well, like NeXT and Silocon Graphics used to make back in the 1990s. I'm sure there's still a need for those specialized computers to this day. Problem is figuring out what they can do that any other high-end x86-based machine cannot.
@matigo Ultimately, yes. In the beginning I think it would be very difficult and cost prohibitive to attempt it, but in order to get any kind of quality, I believe Alan Kay was right. "People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware." :)
@matigo I have a small dream to start a computer company that attempts to do just that, but I fear it will probably never come to pass. Oh well, a dream is at least something.
@matigo And they have also gained a lot of bloat, in my opinion. Why can't someone make a brutally fast web browser that's compliant with the current W3C standard and support a plugin architecture so you can add on what little functionality you might want to add to that?
@matigo I don't think being an idealist is a bad thing. The rest of the world tends to look at things in a more ruthless way. Profit at all costs, no matter who or what takes a beating in the process. See climate change, environmental disasters, refugee crisis, and mass starvation.
Sometimes it's not cool being a part of this species. :/
@matigo Well it feels like an awful lot, but my mindset about HTML/CSS and webdev in general is about 10-ish years out of date. ?
@matigo I haven't been on a contract since… 2010, I think. No regrets from my side either. It's not until I had to start venturing outside of the apartment to go to work that I purchased a one year data addon to my prepaid card. :D
@matigo Amazing how something so small can make very modern things grind to a complete halt.
