My thoughts are in line with what you described, although i hadn't heard about Snaps until now. This I need to explore more!

A factor I keep coming back to is that a great deal of people are "too plugged into the matrix", they just don't care about their data. The small but growing movement of self-hosting is a welcome one, but I don't think it'll be as widespread as all the people using twitter, tumblr, farcebork, and what have you.

We can't save everyone, but we can at least build better tools for a lot of people.

Makes me want to start a company, nearly. Too bad I hate the bureaucracy that comes with it. ?
