@skematica The stock firmware on my router was sub-par to say the least, not so much in functionality as in reliability. Loss of connection, slow response times and low transfer speeds were the norm. Not ideal when you want to transfer large files over the network.
Thus, it was time for a change, and I found Gargoyle, which combines DD-WRT with a pretty good graphical interface for configuration, via a web interface as is so common these days. Works a treat so far.
The Pi is basically a dedicated ad-blocker on the network level, using the Pi-Hole suite of software/configuration. Just take a basic Raspbian install and run the script, a little while later you have a machine that'll filter out all the crud on the web. Just point the router to use the Pi as a DNS server, and it'll work for everyone on the network. :)
No hiccups so far, but it's still early days.
And why in the name of fekk is there an ambulance helicopter landing not far from here?!
@matigo Ah yes, I remember that from when I was in Japan during the "winter" a few times. I'll probably hear them several times next visit too.
Made some good progress last night. Finally got fed up and installed Gargoyle on my TP-Link router, so that's actually working well for once, and I repurposed my Raspberry Pi B to be a Pi-Hole. With those two on the network, I now actually don't feel frustrated by the Internet connection for the first time in months.
